Hi guys! I have a website! And a blog! And my excitement has reached 97.3%!
This is the more relaxed section of the website. Hopefully you like what you’ve found so far. (If not, feel free to post a comment. I try to take constructive criticism on board.)
I thought it would be fun to share a wee bit more about me and my interests, so I have created this mock interview.
Enjoy!

Interview with a music student
1) Where are you from?
I lived in Bearsden (a suburb of Glasgow, Scotland) with my parents and little sister, Jenny, until I finished secondary school. Now I share a flat in Aberdeen with two other students.
2) What instruments do you play?
I’ve played the piano since I was five and I started the flute when I entered secondary school. I love playing piano more than anything else in the world. It calms me down when I’m stressed and cheers me up when I’m unhappy. I especially enjoy playing show tunes although classical pieces are fun, too.
3) Why did you decide to study music at university?
I wasn’t planning on it. I studied physics for two years before illness caused me to miss several months of classes. I wasn’t really enjoying physics so, after realising that I would have to repeat the year, I auditioned to switch my course. I gained direct entry into second year music and I’m much happier now. I think music has always been my true vocation.
4) Do you have a favourite artist or band?
I’m in awe of Hayley Westenra’s voice. When I heard her singing on Songs of Praise I was so overwhelmed I went on iTunes and downloaded several of her songs. I introduced her music to my father with promises that “she’s like Enya, but even better!” I don’t know whether he agreed with me, but he certainly enjoyed her.
5) Who is your favourite composer?
I read somewhere that asking a music lover to choose their favourite composer is like asking a mother to choose their favourite child. If I had to pick a composer, I’d probably go with Franz Schubert; some of his key changes are breathtaking. We had a music history lecture a few weeks ago featuring several of Schubert’s pieces, including his wonderful Der Erlkönig, which gave me goose bumps. It was awesome!
6) What are your favourite and least favourite musical genres?
I really like show tunes from musicals – Andrew Lloyd Webber, in particular – and recently I’ve developed a love from music from the Romantic era. I’ve always really liked Classical music (Mozart and Haydn, especially).
As for least favourite genres... I dislike most dance music – it’s really annoying to listen to for more than thirty seconds at a time. And rap music would be okay if it omitted all the gratuitous swearing and disturbing lyrics.
7) Outside music, what do you do for fun?
I read a lot. I tend to have loads of books on the go at once, and then dip in and out of each of them depending on my mood. This makes my rate-of-completion per book pretty slow. My mother once made a bet with me that I wouldn’t finish reading Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables (the film that came out last Christmas is based on a stage musical which is based on this ultra-long book). I eventually won the bet after reading the book on-and-off for 4 years!
As well as reading, I also write stuff. I’m currently writing a sci-fi novel with three of my friends at university. It’s based on the legend of Tannhäuser (Wagner wrote a pretty epic opera featuring the character) and is set on a 23rd-century spaceship.
8) If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I’d go to Austria. I’d attend an opera at the Vienna State Opera House and visit Salzburg where Mozart was born and the Sound of Music is set.
9) Favourite and least favourite food?
If drinks count, I’d have to say my favourite food is Diet Coke. Otherwise, it’d have to be a Meatball Marinara sandwich from Subway. Although, that said, I practically survived off a diet of oranges during my first year of university.
10) What do you hope to achieve from this website?
Um... to have fun? To share my love of and ideas about music to as many people as will listen (/read) and to create a music blog that I’d be interested in reading. I’d like to become a music journalist after university, and this is probably a good starting point.
